- As soon as you are informed that you have reached the interview stage of the employment process, the learning and preparation begins.
- It is important that you research the company and are familiar with their products and/or services, distribution channels, the names of key personnel etc. This shows that you are interested in the position and the organisation and that you possess such key skills as initiative and a drive to succeed. It will also enable you to hold a well-informed discussion with the client about the company. You can find this information through the company’s website, through libraries and newspapers and through talking to friends and family that have either been a customer or have worked for the company.
- One of the opening questions you are likely to be asked is “What do you know about our organisation”. The above research will enable you to answer this confidently.
- There are several other typical questions that you will be asked and it is important that you have given thought into how you may reply to these prior to entering the interview room. Examples of these questions can be found further down.
- Have a think about what you would like to get out of the interview and what information you would like to convey to the interviewer. It would be helpful to have some prepared questions to ask so as to reiterate your interest and enthusiasm towards the position.
- Make sure that you know the name of the people who will be interviewing you. Also, know where the interview will be taking place and where you are going to park.
- Organise your day so that you aren’t restricted on time. The interviewer(s) may want you to meet other members of the organisation or to take you on an impromptu site tour – all positive signs in terms of their level of interest.
- Take time to refresh yourself with details of your present and past employers and role play how you would answer questions they may come up using examples from your work experience to date.
- It is important to have a clear understanding of what the responsibilities and requirements of the position are. If you are still unsure, don’t be afraid to ask.
- If you are still interested in the position then do not hesitate to tell the interviewer this and to further enquire what the next step in the process is.
- Thank the interviewer for their time.
Personal Appearance
- “Ninety percent of what we think about a person is determined in the first ninety seconds we meet them.” Therefore, it cannot be stressed enough how important it is that you dress smart and professionally. This means a suit and a tie for men and skirt/tailored pants and jacket for women. Polish your shoes and try to avoid flamboyant colours and styles unless you are interviewing for a position within a creative industry.
- Never smoke prior to an interview; it’s a guaranteed turn off.
- You have put in so much effort to reach the interview stage so spend the time ensuring your appearance is clean, tidy and professional.
